Weather cited for Indiana State Fair attendance dip

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana State Fair officials expect final attendance figures for this year's fair could fall a bit short of their goal.

The fair's 17-day run ended Sunday with mild and sunny weather, but hot temperatures on the opening days and some thunderstorms hurt attendance.

The Indianapolis Star reports that attendance was about 800,000 through Saturday and organizers expected Sunday's crowd would leave the fair near the 875,000-person goal. Last year's stage collapse-marred fair drew about 872,000 people with one day canceled.

Fair spokesman Andy Klotz says it doesn't matter how many great events and deals the fair offers if the weather doesn't cooperate.

The fair set its attendance record of nearly 974,000 in 2009.
