Provide sources for your rancor, please

Hank Achor’s last two letters (“We must end class warfare in America,” June 20, and “Can candidate Paul Ryan save America?” Aug. 17) have made it clear how anti-libertarian he feels. But in both of his screeds he fails to cite any sources as to why he feels as he does. In contemplating how to pick apart his last letter (I thought I already did that fairly well in my reply to his first, “Libertarians not devils,” July 10), I decided not to waste time on debate here.

So, I challenge you, Hank Achor, to provide us with specific sources for the rancor that you have come to feel about libertarianism. What are your solutions to our problems if not freedom? Yes, you said in your last letter something about Nietzsche and Rand. To my knowledge neither of them were libertarians. Again, I ask you what are your sources that have led you to equate libertarianism with Nazism. Inquiring minds want to know. Care to engage in dueling pens? I’m game.

School lunches are a work in progress

With the new school year here parents’ attention is turning to school clothes, supplies and lunches. Yes, school lunches.

Traditionally, the USDA had used the National School Lunch Program as a dumping ground for surplus meat and dairy commodities. Not surprisingly, its surveys indicate children consume excessive amounts of animal fat and sugary drinks, to the point where a third have become overweight or obese. Their early dietary flaws become lifelong addictions, raising their risk of diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Gradually, the tide is turning. The new USDA school lunch guidelines, mandated by President Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, require doubling the servings of fruits and vegetables, more whole grains, less sodium and fat and no meat for breakfast. Still, food lobbyists have prevailed on Congress to count pizza and French fries as vegetables, and fatty mystery meats and sugary dairy drinks abound.

Parents and students should consider healthy school lunch as a work in progress and insist on healthful plant-based school meals, snacks and vending machine items. Guidance is available at www.fns.usda.gov/; www. healthyschoollunches.org; and www.vrg.org/family.

Word living, active

The word of God is living and active. It is sharper than any sword that has two edges. It cuts deep enough to separate soul from spirit. It can separate joints from bones. It judges the thoughts and purposes of the heart. Nothing God created is hidden from him. His eyes see everything. He will hold us accountable for everything we do. (Hebrews 4:12-13 NIRV)
