INDIANAPOLIS — The American Legion is honoring Sen. Richard Lugar for his career seeking and disarming nuclear weapons.

Legion National Commander Fang Wong honored Lugar for helping find and disarm 7,500 nuclear warheads through the 1991 legislation the senator co-authored with former Sen. Sam Nunn. The veterans group awarded Lugar its Distinguished Service Medal at its annual convention in Indianapolis Tuesday.

Lugar lost his re-election bid in May, ending a 36-year career in the U.S. Senate.

Lugar thanked the veterans in his acceptance speech for protecting American freedoms and helping export those values of liberty and democracy abroad. The foreign policy expert also said that increasing challenges to America's global dominance have led many to underestimate the nation's ability to adapt and change.
