Man faces felony charge after van strikes 3-year-old

Saturday, September 8, 2012 - 7:28 am

Official charges have been brought against the man accused of running over a 3-year-old boy and fleeing the scene.

Thirty-eight-year-old Michael T. Harris, also known as Timothy Johnson and Michael Johnson, has been charged with one count of failure to stop after an accident resulting in injury or death. The charge was filed in Allen Superior Court on Friday.

Police allege that Harris was behind the wheel of a green minivan that struck 3-year-old Jaime Saldana while backing out of a driveway in the 4900 block of Oliver Street just before 5 p.m. Sunday. Harris fled in the van, according to court documents.

Saldana was taken to a hospital in serious but stable condition. Doctors later changed his condition to critical. According to court documents, he suffered a skull fracture along with facial and torso injuries.

On Monday, Harris turned himself into police and admitted he was the driver of the van and knew he had run over the boy, but said he panicked and left the scene, according to court documents.

A preliminary charge against Harris of driving while suspended was dropped.
