Three Fort Wayne men have been charged in connection with a shooting early Sunday morning that allegedly targeted people inside a car and ambulance en route to a hospital.
Police have said a white Ford Crown Victoria opened fire at about 3:15 a.m. on the car and ambulance, which was transporting a man who had been stabbed in a dispute at Piere's nightclub, 5629 St. Joe Road. Family members and a friend of the stabbing victim were following the ambulance in a black Chevrolet Impala, police said.
Traneilous L. Jackson, 24, faces a preliminary charge of aggravated battery and three other felony counts, including criminal recklessness involving a firearm, in the shooting.
Two other men -- Alfonso L. Chappell, 27, and Jakwan D. Braster, 18 -- who were allegedly in the car with Jackson also face charges.
Police said three people in the black Chevrolet were injured in the shooting. A medic also was hurt by glass that shattered when a bullet hit the ambulance, police said.
The alleged victims were listed in stable condition Sunday. Their conditions were not available Monday morning, Fort Wayne Police spokeswoman Officer Raquel Foster said in a statement.
Police also detained and later released a fourth person who was inside the white car at the time of the shooting, Foster said.
According to news partner WANE-TV, Ch. 15, at least 17 bullet holes were found in the ambulance, with a Three Rivers Ambulance Authority spokesman telling the news station that an emergency medical technician had bullet fragments in his left elbow and forearm and superficial injuries to his midsection. The medical technician was reportedly doing well, the news station was told.
The driver of the ambulance – a member of the Fort Wayne Fire Department, according to WANE – provided the description of the alleged vehicle from where the gunfire originated.
Jackson has been charged numerous times in recent years with weapons-related charges, including a 2010 conviction for Class C felony carrying a handgun without a license with a prior felony conviction within the last 15 years.
He was sentenced to six years in prison in April of 2011, but four of those years were suspended, according to online court documents.
According to the Indiana Department of Corrections, Jackson was eligible for release from prison on June 16.
