Also, the Washington Nationals gear down for playoff run

Tuesday, September 11, 2012 - 2:50 am

Peyton Manning replica Denver Broncos jerseys were banned by a school in Greeley, Colo., because officials said they have a gang connotation. Apparently, there's a simmering feud between the Bloods, the Crips and the Papa Johns.

Manning had a great day in his first game in more than a year, leading the Broncos to a win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. It's hard to say who took the loss harder, Steeler Nation or Jim Irsay's Twitter followers.

Playoff preparation at its worst

The Washington Nationals decided to shut down pitcher Stephen Strasburg despite the team's chances for a playoff run. In a related move, the Washington Nationals are slapping their fans in the face for no extra charge.

Get me Savannah State on the phone

The University of Arkansas dropped from No.8 to unranked after a loss to “directional school” Louisiana-Monroe. Not only that, but the Razorbacks had to change their name this week to the University of Arkansas-Embarrassed.

Next time, spike it

San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis was rejected by the goal post crossbar when he tried to “dunk” the football after a touchdown pass. The Charlotte Bobcats called and offered to trade a second-round draft pick for the crossbar.

Beats working

The owners of the defunct ABA team St. Louis Spirits have made $240 million since the 1970s as part of an agreement from the NBA-ABA merger. That makes the Spirits the most lucrative franchise to win nothing besides the Chicago Cubs.

A little Memphis ownership soul

The prospective new owners of the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies have enlisted singer Justin Timberlake as part of the ownership group. They considered approaching Janet Jackson, but they were afraid of an ownership malfunction. (Don't worry. I checked. There's no expiration date on that cheap reference.)

Exporting the big man?

Retired NBA superstar Shaquille O'Neal is considering an offer to play a few games in the Mexican league. Talks are currently stalled on whether the team would actually require Shaq to run past half court on defense. However, he'll be known as either the Big Enchilada or El Loco Shaq.
