Project collects more than 1,000 items for U.S. troops

Saturday, September 15, 2012 - 12:01 am

Misty Wallin, event coordinator for the Defenders' Dash 5K and 11K races on Sept. 8, worked with Alison Mansfield of Fort Wayne, founder of Operation U.S. Troop Support, to hold a “Fill the Hummer for the Troops” project at the event, a news release said.

The event was hosted by New Hope Baptist Church and began in front of the Homestead High School Freshmen Academy parking lot on Aboite Center Road.

The “Fill the Hummer” drive received 1,024 items for U.S. troops, the news release said. The church, 8918 Aboite Center Road, will continue to accept donations. For information on what to donate, go to www.operationustroopsupport.org.

Since 2005, Mansfield, a senior at Homestead High School, has been collecting socks, toiletries and other needed items and sending them to U.S. troops serving overseas.

She hopes to ship a combined total of more than 100,000 items to U.S. troops before she graduates in June. If you would like to help, send an e-mail with your contact information to operationustroopsupport@live.com.
