DUI suspected in Whitley County crash; passenger's neck broken

Saturday, September 15, 2012 - 9:51 am

A driver was arrested and her passenger was hospitalized with a broken neck in a crash early Saturday in Whitley County.

According to Indiana State Police Senior Trooper Joel Lemmon, at around 3:25 a.m. a 1998 Nissan four-door owned and operated by Susan R. Janes, 45, of rural Columbia City was traveling northbound on Willow Avenue, north of Colony Avenue in the Shriner Lake area.

Janes' vehicle left the right side of the road and went over a curb before hitting a parked 1995 Chevrolet in a yard, according to an ISP news release. As a result of the crash, Janes' passenger, Michael Grim, 47, of rural Columbia City, suffered a broken neck and was taken to a local hospital, according to the release.

Janes, whose preliminary breath alcohol was more than twice the legal limit, was arrested on a charge of operating while intoxicated (refusal) and was incarcerated in the Whitley County Jail, according to the release.

Assisting Lemmon were the Whitley County Sheriff Department, Whitley County EMS and the Thorncreek Fire Department.
