One person hurt in fire that damages home

Fire caused heavy damage to a home Friday night and a person inside was burned.

The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded at 10:15 p.m. to a reported house fire at 3516 Congress Ave. Fire crews saw smoke coming from the second floor and found the fire started in the basement of the home, according to a news release.

The fire did not extend beyond the basement, but the second floor received extensive smoke and water damage.

One person inside the home escaped with burns. The victim was taken to a hospital. The fire's cause is under investigation.

Early Childhood Alliance expanding service region

The Early Childhood Alliance announced Wednesday that it will soon expand its service region from six counties to 10.

Effective Oct. 1, Early Childhood Alliance will become the child care resource and referral agency for Elkhart, Kosciusko, Marshall and St. Joseph counties. ECA's region currently includes Allen, DeKalb, LaGrange, Noble, Steuben and Whitley counties.

This expansion, which will result in additional direct service staff, is a key reason for the organization's goal of moving its administrative facility to a more northern location in Allen County.

Facing a longtime need for more space for staff, additional technology support, and more convenient access for the region's early childhood professionals to attend trainings and use other support services, ECA's board is planning to sell its office building at 3320 Fairfield Ave. in Fort Wayne.

The move will not affect ECA's three children's centers in Fort Wayne.

Early Childhood Alliance is a nonprofit United Way partner that promotes and provides quality early childhood education and services for families, early childhood professionals and the community.
