NEW HARMONY — Federal Highway Administration officials are coming to southwestern Indiana to discuss the future of a closed Wabash River bridge that links Indiana and Illinois.
Agency officials will visit historic New Harmony on Friday morning for an expected meeting with members of the White County Bridge Commission, Indiana Department of Transportation and the Posey County Commissioners.
The privately owned toll bridge had provided a link between Posey County in Indiana and White County in Illinois. It was closed in May when inspectors declared it structurally unsafe for traffic.
The Evansville Courier & Press reports Indiana has offered $10 million toward construction of a new bridge estimated to cost $25 million.
Illinois officials have told their Indiana counterparts that Illinois has no interest in providing money for a new bridge.
