With the weather we've had this year, predicting the timing and brightness of fall color is just a guess. But here are tips from Sam Carman, the education director for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources' Division of Forestry:
•Normally, the best fall color appears in October — the first week in northern Indiana, second week in central Indiana and end of the month in southern Indiana.
•Even with recent rains, tree still are stressed from the summer drought.
“When we've had really dry years, it's been my observation the color comes a little earlier and maybe not as intense as we'd like.”
•Warm, sunny days with cool, crisp nights produce the best fall color.
•A hard frost can cause leaves to fall more quickly. Wind and rain also can strip a tree quickly of its leafy fall splendor.

Fall color normally peaks in northern Indiana during the first week of October. But the summer drought and recent rains make this season anything but normal.

And if we get a hard frost or two and some wind and rain, it could be a really short season for fall foliage.

So get your camera ready and plan to get out and capture fall beauty when and where you find it. Then enter your photos in our Fall Photo Contest for a chance to win a $50 Jefferson Pointe mall gift card.

Our staff judges will select a winner based on the best photo of fall foliage taken this fall. We'll be looking at image clarity, composition, lighting and overall visual appeal. Limit of one photo per person. No altered photos please.

You must be a resident of northeast Indiana to enter. Deadline is noon Oct. 29.

We plan to publish the best photos in the paper and at www.news-sentinel.com in early November.

Here's how to enter your photos:

•Web: Go to www.news-sentinel.com. In the navigation bar, click on Living and then scroll down to the “Submit a Photo” icon. Click on the icon and follow the instructions on the photo submission page. In the caption, please write “Fall Foliage Photo Contest.”

•Mail: Send to Fall Foliage Photo Contest, C/O Features, The News-Sentinel, 600 W. Main St., Fort Wayne, IN 46802. Include your name, daytime phone number, what the photo shows and the location where it was taken. Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you want the photo returned.
