Briefs: Fall photo contest; Chilifest; 'Stone Soup'; peace play

Fall color normally peaks in northern Indiana during the first week of October. But the summer drought and recent rains make this season anything but normal.And if we get a hard frost or two and some wind and rain, it could be a really short season for fall foliage.

So get your camera ready and plan to get out and capture fall beauty when and where you find it.

Then enter your photos in our Fall Foliage Photo Contest for a chance to win a $50 Jefferson Pointe mall gift card.

Our staff judges will select a winner based on the best photo of fall foliage taken this year. We'll look at image clarity, composition, lighting and overall visual appeal. Limit of one photo per person. No altered photos please.

You must be a resident of northeast Indiana to enter. Deadline is noon Oct. 29.

We plan to publish the best photos in the paper and at www.news-sentinel.com in early November.

Here's how to enter your photos:

Web: Go to www.news-sentinel.com. In the navigation bar, click on Living and then scroll down to the “Submit a Photo” icon. Click on the icon and follow the instructions on the photo submission page. In the caption, please write “Fall Foliage Photo Contest.”

Mail: Send to Fall Foliage Photo Contest, C/O Features, The News-Sentinel, 600 W. Main St., Fort Wayne, IN 46802. Include your name, daytime phone number, what the photo shows and the location where it was taken. Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you want the photo returned.

Call 461-8347.While IPFW is hosting its Poss-Abilities Camp this weekend for children who use augmentative/alternative communication devices, they are learning how to perform in a live theatre production. The children will present “Stone Soup” at 5 p.m. Sunday in Neff Hall, Room 101, 2101 Coliseum Blvd. E. Free admission. A reception takes place afterward.Goshen College announced the winning play in the 2012 Goshen College Peace Play Contest — the only contest devoted solely to plays about peace and peace-related topics in the United States — is “Mr. Maurizio” by playwright Mic Weinblatt of Minneapolis. The play premieres at 8 p.m. today, with other performances at 4 p.m. Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday in the college's Umble Center, Goshen. The 2 p.m. performance will be ASL interpreted.

Admission is $3 and can be purchased at the door or at the Goshen College Welcome Center.Chilifest “Fire in the Fort” cook-off takes place Saturday at Headwaters Park.

Admission is $5 for adults and free for ages 14 and under, who must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Registration: www.chilifestfort.Community Action of Northeast Indiana will be closed Monday in observance of Columbus Day. The agency will resume services Tuesday.
