Luers, Dwenger girls win soccer regionals

Canterbury, DeKalb take boys regional crowns

Sunday, October 14, 2012 - 12:01 am

Bishop Luers' and Bishop Dwenger's girls soccer teams served up a pair of stingy defensive performances to win regional titles Saturday.

Luers beat Oak Hill 9-1 to win the Class A Canterbury Regional while Dwenger shut down Leo 2-0 to win the Class 2A East Noble Regional. Both schools advance to semistate play next Saturday.

Luers' Kelly Dwire and Addie Reimbold scored to give the Knights a 2-0 lead just 10 minutes into the first half against Oak Hill. But a handball foul in the box gave the Eagles a penalty kick just seconds later. The Eagles' Caroline Wickes converted the play with a low hard shot off the post past Luers keeper Taylor Tobe to make it 2-1.

Luers then used a smothering defensive back line of Patsy Berghoff, Kate Eifrid, Haley Stronczek and Shayna Coy to limit the visitors to only one more shot on goal late in the game.

The Knights' midfielders controlled the pace of play and set up seniors Mayson Whitman and Dwire to score four and three goals, respectively. Reimbold finished with two goals.

Bishop Luers will play next in the first round semi-state game at Argos at noon next Saturday.

Dwenger's girls, meanwhile, engaged in a showdown with Leo, fighting through a scoreless first half. But Dwenger's Lexie Royal broke the tie with a second half goal to give the Saints the control they needed.

Dwenger (14-4) will play Crown Point (18-3) in the South Bend St. Joe Semistate at noon Saturday.

Canterbury wins Class A boys regional

Britt Watts scored two goals and Cole Walker one to lead the Canterbury boys soccer team to a 3-0 win over West Noble in the Class A regional.

Chase Walker turned away four shots on goal to seal the shutout.

Canterbury (13-6-1) will play Bethany Christian (17-5) in the LaVille Semistate next Saturday.

DeKalb tops Dwenger in boys 2A regional

The DeKalb Barons used two goals by Austin Sibery to beat Bishop Dwenger 2-1 and win the Class 2A Carroll regional.

Sibery's second goal, in the 67th minute, broke a tie.

DeKalb (18-2) also had a strong defensive performance, led by goalkeeper Chase Secrist, who had five saves. Brian Gore scored for Dwenger, which finished 16-3.

DeKalb will move on to play Warsaw in the Warsaw Semistate at noon next Saturday.
