Health briefs: Alzheimer's support groups meet; food collection planned

Alzheimer’s support groups

The Alzheimer's Association holds these free November support groups: 10 a.m. Thursday, Waynedale Library, 2200 Lower Huntington Road; 10 a.m. Nov. 8, Trinity English Lutheran Church, 405 W. Food collection

Community Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Indiana's Turkey Rally 2012 will be 5 a.m.-11 p.m. Thursday at 999 E. Tillman Road. Indiana's NewsCenter will broadcast live reports from the food bank during their newscasts. Frozen turkeys, hams, holiday food items and monetary donations will be accepted.

Cancer education

Parkview Comprehensive Cancer Center will host a free Community Education Forum on breast cancer 6-8 p.m. Thursday, at the Parkview Comprehensive Cancer Center, Conference Rooms 3 A and B (third floor), 11143 Parkview Plaza Drive, Entrance 4. Door prizes and light snacks will be provided. Reservations accepted until Wednesday.

Trail run or ride

With Love Left Over will host its first annual Off-Road Trail Challenge at 10 a.m. Saturday, at the Kin-Ti-On-Ki trail, Salamonie Reservoir, 9214 Lost Bridge West, Andrews. Teams and individuals of four or more runners can choose a 10K or an 18K run. Awards will be given to the top 3 finishers in every category.

In addition, a mountain bike race will be at noon for a 10K or 32K race. All participants will receive a Tech-T shirt.

Upcoming conference

2012 Conference for People with Disabilities and Community Advocates will be Dec. 4-5 at the Westin, Indianapolis. Registration deadline is Nov. 16, and hotel reservation deadline is Nov. 5. There are openings for those who only need a $10 registration fee.

Memory screening offered

National Memory Screening Day will be Nov. 13. Visiting Angels, Living Assistance Service will provide screenings for possible Alzheimer's disease or dementia noon-4 p.m. at Avalon Missionary Church, 1212 Lower Huntington Road. The event is part of an initiative the Alzheimer's Foundation of America holds each November during National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month.
