Man struck, killed on Clinton after getting out of moving vehicle

Sunday, November 4, 2012 - 8:36 pm

A man who got out of a Jeep on North Clinton Street during an argument with the driver was struck and killed by a passing vehicle early Sunday morning, according to Fort Wayne Police.

The Allen County coroner's office identified the victim as Richard John May, 25, of Bluffton. Preliminary autopsy findings point to multiple blunt-force injuries as the cause of his death, which has been ruled as an accident, according to a news release. His death is the 32nd traffic fatality in Fort Wayne and Allen County in 2012.

Police were called to the intersection of North Clinton and Grove Street at 3:17 a.m. where they found May on Clinton, said police spokesman Sgt. Mark Brooks.

May was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Brooks, the following occurred: Witnesses said the Jeep was southbound on North Clinton while the driver and front-seat passenger, May, were arguing. May got out of the moving vehicle and landed on North Clinton. A driver in an Impala was close behind the Jeep and struck May. The driver of the Impala immediately stopped and remained on scene.

Alcohol is not a factor in this crash for the Impala driver, Brook said. The driver was not reported to have been injured as a result of the crash.

The incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department and its Fatal Alcohol Crash Team, the coroner's office and the county prosecutor's office.
