WEST LAFAYETTE — Groups from three Indiana universities have been recognized for their efforts to assist student veterans.

The University of Evansville, Indiana University-Southeast and Purdue University won $2,000 each in a competition held at the NCAA Hall of Champions in Indianapolis. The event was sponsored by Operation Diploma, an initiative of the Military Family Research Institute.

Evansville won first place for its outreach efforts, which include a Veterans Day 5K Walk, Run and Roll Race, a veterans'fair, and a city-wide book read intended to enhance understanding of soldiers' readjustment issues.

The Military Family Research Institute is a research and outreach organization based at Purdue. It is supported by Lilly Endowment Inc., the Department of Defense, and other organizations.
