A local Marine veteran and Allen County Council member is planning an event to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the official start of American involvement in the Vietnam War.Kevin Howell Thursday was expected to announce plans for the “Vietnam Veterans of America National Homecoming 2013,” to be held at the Memorial Coliseum next October. President John F. Kennedy authorized U.S. troops to assist in South Vietnam in October 1963.

“There was nothing going on” to observe the anniversary, Howell explained, noting that details are still being worked out but are expected to include breakfast at the Coliseum and a parade to the Courthouse. The event is intended to honor all veterans, and Howell said he hopes it will attract hundreds or even thousands of people.

For more information or to help, contact Howell at 440-0948.
