Fort Wayne woman hurt in crash dies day after release from hospital

Coroner rules her death a result of the collision

The Allen County coroner's office has ruled that a woman who was released from a hospital after a crash died the next day as a result of the crash.

Gladys M. Dye, 69, of Fort Wayne was a passenger in a vehicle involved in a crash Sept. 25 at Indiana 1 and Tonkel Road in northern Allen County, according to a news release. Dye was treated and released from a hospital but was found unresponsive in her home Sept. 26. She was pronounced dead by medics, according to the release.

An autopsy was performed and final results show that she died of blunt-force trauma from the crash and her death was ruled an accident, according to the release.

An accident report said that she was a passenger in a 1999 Mercury Sable wagon driven by Richard Dye, 77, of the same address as Gladys Dye. The report said that Richard Dye, who was driving west on Ind. 1, disregarded a traffic signal and was struck by a 2008 Ford F-250 pickup headed south on Tonkel Road.

Richard and Gladys Dye both complained of chest pain after the accident, according to the report, and the driver of the other vehicle complained of back pain.

Her death is the 34th traffic fatality for Fort Wayne and Allen County in 2012.
