Rally planned for Armistice Day

A group interested in bringing back the original intention of Veterans Day as a day of peace plans a rally at 2 p.m. Sunday at Courthouse Green.

Fighting ceased in the “war to end all wars” on the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. The total number of military and civilian casualties in World War I was reportedly more than 37 million. Congress added Nov. 11 to the list of federal holidays as Armistice Day to perpetuate good will. Then on June 1, 1954, Congress changed the name to Veterans Day. A model drone will be on display Sunday and Food Not Bombs will serve vegetarian food. For more information, see “Reclaim Armistice Day” at www.youtube.com.

Flag ceremony Monday

Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne will commemorate Veterans Day at noon Monday with the third 3rd annual flag ceremony in Walb Student Union Ballroom.

Associate professor of English and linguistics Stevens R. Amidon, a retired Navy chief petty officer, will make the address on, “Citizen/Soldier: Not an Oxymoron!” The event is free and open to the public.

Mail delivery to be earlier Tuesday

Because of the Veterans Day holiday, the U.S. Postal Service will have an earlier than usual delivery Tuesday. Some carriers will be out at 7 a.m., said Greater Indiana District Manager Bernice Grant.
