A man faces domestic violence charges after allegedly threatening a woman with a gun and holding police at bay while two children slept in an apartment in downtown Fort Wayne on Saturday morning.Officers of the Fort Wayne Police Department responded at 3:22 a.m. Saturday to the 800 block of West Jefferson Boulevard in reference to a domestic violence call. Responding officers contacted the victim who said she and the suspect, Ryan Andrew Baughman, 23, had been involved in a heated domestic dispute, according to FWPD spokesman Sgt. Mark Brooks. Baughman was reported to be under the influence of alcohol and prescription drugs and had allegedly grabbed a semi-automatic handgun and threatened the victim, police were told, according to Brooks. The woman had fled the residence and contacted police. She had minor injuries.

Officers were not able to make contact with Baughman, who was inside the locked multi-family residence. The FWPD Emergency Services Team and the Crisis Response Team were called. The Crisis Response Team made several attempts to contact Baughman by various means, but to no avail.

According to Brooks, the following occurred: Just after 6 a.m., officers of the Emergency Services Team forced their way into the apartment with the use of a directed explosive charge. They quickly entered the residence and Baughman was quickly taken into custody. At the time, he was allegedly armed with a semi-automatic handgun and two additional loaded magazines of ammunition.

A 1-year-old boy and 4-year-old girl were found to be sleeping in the next room and were returned safely to their mother, Brooks said.

No injures were reported as a result of the forced entry into the apartment.
