TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State University is starting work on the school's first new residence hall in more than 40 years.

School officials broke ground Thursday on the four-story, $21 million North Residence Hall that's designed to house about 350 students. It's expected to be open by summer 2014 and is designed for small groups, including student organizations and fraternities or sororities.

Associate dean of students Brooks Moore says the building will go up on the site of an existing parking lot north of the Hulman Memorial Student Union that's considered "prime real estate." He says the site is close to the student union, academic buildings and the library on the Terre Haute campus.

Indiana State last opened a new residence hall in 1969.
