The Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne said this week it has given the American Red Cross a $10,000 grant to help with ongoing Hurricane Sandy relief on the east coast.

The foundation presented the money to the Red Cross of Northeast Indiana, according to a written statement. More than 5,800 Red Cross workers from across the country are helping with the hurricane relief effort, the statement said.

The Red Cross of Northeast Indiana has deployed 33 local volunteers toward the effort over the past two weeks, according to Chief Operations Officer Katherine MacAulay.

The community foundation also gave $500 to the New York-based American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to help rescue animals affected by the storm.
