IPFW volleyball heading back to NCAA Tournament after winning Summit League title

Sunday, November 18, 2012 - 1:24 pm

Senior setter Megan Steenhuysen ran IPFW's offense with near perfect precision and straight past IUPUI to earn a berth in the women's volleyball NCAA Tournament.

Steenhuysen had a match-high 40 assists as IPFW swept IUPUI 25-15, 25-12, 25-20 in the Summit League Tournament championship match Saturday in Fargo, N.D., to win the conference title and the conference's automatic bid to NCAA Tournament.

Steenhuysen was named the Summit League Tournament MVP as IPFW out-hit the Summit League regular season champions IUPUI .225 to zero. In addition, the Mastodons held the Jaguars to a negative attack percentage in the first two games.

The Mastodons (25-6, 12-4 Summit League) had two players finish with at least 10 kills in its championship victory. Outside attacker and the 2012 Summit League Player of Year Emily Spencer had a match-high 15 kills, while middle attacker Jessie Manwaring added 11 kills.

Libero Tessa McGill, the Summit League Defensive Player of the Year, led all players with 20 digs against IUPUI (22-10, 13-3 Summit League). McGill also had a match-high four aces in the victory.

IPFW out-blocked IUPUI 11-8 with outside attacker Hailie Ripley finishing with a match-high six blocks.

The Mastodons closed out the third game on a 13-9 run to complete the sweep -- one week after IUPUI defeated IPFW in five games in the regular season finale to win the conference regular season title.

IPFW in the second game held IUPUI to a match-low attack percentage and led by as many as 13 points to take a two-game lead.

With the opening game tied at 10, McGill had two aces as part of a 7-0 IPFW run to jump start the Mastodons' 10-point win. Spencer also finished the first game leading all players with eight kills.

This is the second time in their program history that the Mastodons have won the Summit League Tournament and earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament. IPFW last appeared in NCAA Tournament in 2009 and lost to Louisville in the first round.

IPFW's first-round opponent and the entire 64-team NCAA Tournament field will be announced at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25 on ESPNU.

The NCAA tournament first-round matches will be played at 16 campus sites located around the nation Nov. 29-30.
