1 hurt in blaze south of downtown Fort Wayne

Monday, November 19, 2012 - 8:13 am

A person was hospitalized in serious condition early Monday morning after being rescued from a burning home south of downtown Fort Wayne.

Firefighters found the person, who was not identified, after responding to a home in the 1000 block of Lincoln Avenue, just east of Broadway, at about 12:20 a.m., the Fort Wayne Fire Department said in a statement.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy flames and smoke coming from the two-story house, which contained four apartments, the statement said. Two people and three pets escaped from the building before fire crews arrived.

Firefighters found the third person while searching the interior of the building.

Fire crews contained the blaze to one apartment unit and had it under control in about 38 minutes, the statement said. The fire caused heavy damage to the apartment.
