Santa makes a stop
At 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Santa will land in his special North Pole helicopter at Smith Field Airport, 902 W. Ludwig Road. Kids can sit on his lap and share their holiday wishes, but Santa also needs their help. He will be collecting new toys for Toys for Tots. The event is 5-7 p.m. and admission is one new, unwrapped toy donation.
The Indiana Commission for Women is seeking nominations for the 2013 Torchbearer Awards. Indiana Torchbearers are women who have stepped forward as leaders by breaking down barriers to women's full participation. Visit www.in.gov/icw/2334.htm to download the nomination form and guidelines. Submitted nomination forms are due by 5 p.m. Dec. 14.
IPFW's College of Arts and Sciences is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a celebration beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Walb Student Union International Ballroom on the campus, 2101 Coliseum Blvd. E. Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Carl Drummond will make a special presentation, which will be followed by an address. Cary Nelson, an acclaimed commentator on higher education issues, will present “Can Academic Freedom Be Saved?” The presentation and lecture are free and open to the public. A private reception will follow the lecture.
The drawing for three prizes in the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum's annual New Car Raffle took place last week. Richard Kocourek, of Western Springs, Ill., was the first-prize winner. He will have his option of one of three new cars or a cash prize. The second prize was awarded to William Hastie of Fair Oaks, Calif. The third prize was awarded to Phyllis Hill of Fort Wayne.
Women’s Studies celebration
On Nov. 30, Community Friends of Women's Studies will hold its seventh annual meeting — actually a celebration, with hors d'oeuvres, live music from Angie Baker, poetry, a cash bar and a chance to become a member of Community Friends of Women's Studies. The event will be 7-10 p.m. at the Arlington Park Clubhouse, 4630 W. Arlington Park Blvd. There is no admission fee, although a membership to CFWS is strongly encouraged. Attendees must RSVP to cfwsinc@ gmail.com or by calling 748-8364. CFWS Inc. is a nonprofit organization that functions as an independent support system for the IPFW women's studies program.
