About 40 people were rescued or safely escaped from a Hobson Road apartment building fire early Sunday morning. One person was in good condition after being taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
The Fort Wayne Fire Department was called at 7:59 a.m. to Building F of Baldwin Creek Apartments,1920 Hobson Road, where fire crews found several people on their balconies and heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof on the south end of the two-story structure, according to a news release.
Crews rescued those outside and went inside to rescue and evacuate more residents, before having the fire under control by 8:22 a.m., according to the release. Residents of the 24 units in the building are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
While the fire was contained to the south end of the building, the entire structure sustained heavy smoke damage. The fire department had no estimate as to when the apartment's residents will be able to return.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
