LaPorte airport hopes improvements boost traffic

LAPORTE — A northwestern Indiana airport is adding lighting and expanding its taxi lane in hopes of attracting more traffic.

The improvements at the LaPorte Municipal Airport include a new 10,000-square-foot hangar being built by business owner Gregory Ake. Ake says the hangar will accommodate five or six larger planes that can't sit outside.

The airport authority also is spending $800,000 to add lighting to its secondary runway and both main taxi lines. Currently, only the main runway has lights.

Authority President Edward Volk tells The LaPorte County Herald-Argus the improvements are the latest in a series of changes. The airport's main runway has doubled in size from 2,500 feet to 5,000 since 1963.

The longer runway helps the airport attract pilots whose planes are too large for other facilities.
