Restaurant news: Area company's spinach balls to be sold on QVC

A Fort Wayne business' food product is going to be sold on the TV shopping channel QVC.Trina and Ramesh Khadoo, owners of The Spinach Ball Company, are currently filling an order for 114,000 spinach balls for QVC that will be shipped to QVC's distribution center and sold on the TV show, likely in January, according to a news release by Northeast Indiana Small Business Development Center.

If you've gone to area farmers markets, you may have sampled or purchased the Khadoos' spinach balls. I sampled them at the Historic West Main Street Farmers Market some time ago, and they were tasty. They would be a great appetizer to serve at a holiday party.

The spinach balls are a new version of an appetizer served at the former Herb Garden Restaurant in Fremont, which was operated by Trina Khadoo and her mother, Connie Moeller. The original recipe was created by Moeller.

The spinach balls can be frozen or refrigerated and reheated in the stove or microwave, Trina Khadoo said in the news release. The company sells a variety of spinach balls: some with cheese centers; some that are low-fat or gluten-free; and a vegetarian version made with all-natural ingredients. They are packaged with a fresh dill dip.

The Khadoos have acquired a specialized machine that produces 100 spinach balls per minute. Before that, they hand-rolled the spinach balls. They currently sell their spinach balls locally at The Olive Twist, Jamison Meats and the Health Food Shoppe, as well as in Indianapolis, Carmel, Columbia City and other locations in Indiana and Ohio.

In addition to QVC, the Khadoos are negotiating with a national market to sell their spinach balls across the U.S., and they continue to expand their distribution sites throughout Indiana and into Ohio. The spinach balls are also available online through the company's Web site at www.spinachball.com.This will be your last chance to enjoy the Taste of The Chamber because of the sale of the building.

It will be 5-8 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce, 826 Ewing St. It's an opportunity to network with area business professionals while enjoying complimentary hors d'oeuvres from dozens of local restaurants and caterers and various cash bars.
