INDIANAPOLIS — The Most Rev. Joseph Tobin has been installed as the sixth archbishop of Indianapolis.
The 60-year-old Detroit native will be the spiritual leader of about 225,000 Catholics in 39 counties of central and southern Indiana, but he told priests and others at his installation Mass Monday that he will be their "chief pastor," not their only pastor.
The Indianapolis Star reports more than 1,000 people attended the Mass at Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Indianapolis. He calls his appointment by Pope Benedict XVI "a great adventure."
Tobin formerly was a high-ranking Holy See official who tried to resolve tense relations between the Vatican and U.S nuns before his transfer.
