DeKalb couple face drug, neglect charges

Saturday, December 8, 2012 - 8:17 am

A DeKalb County couple allegedly had a pound of marijuana and a loaded handgun near their 3-year-old daughter, police said.

Benjamin C. Hayes, 25, and Brytanne R. Hayes, 23, both of Garrett, face multiple drug and neglect charges after police executed a search warrant Thursday at their home in the 200 block of South Randolph Street.

Police with a northeast Indiana drug task force went to the home after receiving a tip Wednesday from the U.S. Postal Service, according to a news release issued by the Indiana Multi Agency Group Enforcement, or IMAGE, task force.

Police allegedly found a pound of marijuana, a loaded gun and drug paraphernalia in the home, where the couple lived with their daughter.

Benjamin and Brytanne Hayes were each taken to the DeKalb County Jail on felony charges of dealing marijuana within 1,000 feet of a youth program; maintaining a common nuisance; and neglect of a dependent, along with a misdemeanor count of possession of paraphernalia.

DeKalb County Department of Child Services took the 3-year-old girl into custody, the news release said.
