PORTAGE — A man who was arrested for driving 100 mph on a northwest Indiana road told police he was late for his wedding, but he wound up in jail instead.

The Times reports that police arrested 23-year-old Timothy N. Thompson about 7 p.m. Saturday at Our Savior Catholic Church in Portage, where he was followed by an officer.

Authorities say relatives at the church flailed their arms at Thompson as he spun his Jeep in a "doughnut."

He told the officer he was supposed to be married at 7 p.m.

Thompson told police he had just been released from jail, and they took him back there. The Times says Thompson didn't make the wedding.

The Associated Press couldn't contact Thompson Tuesday because his phone number wasn't published.
