Ball State, ISU on website’s ‘most dangerous’ list

Wednesday, December 12, 2012 - 12:01 am

A business website has listed Ball State and Indiana State universities on its “America’s Most Dangerous Colleges” list.

Business Insider, www.businessinsider.com, issued the 25 rankings in November, based on the number of crimes committed on or near campus, as reported by the FBI 2008-2011, according to its website.

At No. 11, Ball State, in Muncie, with a 2011 enrollment of 22.083 students, averaged 19 violent crimes and 353 property crimes, according to Business Insider.

Indiana State, in Terre Haute, with 11,494 students, was No. 12 with an average of nine violent crimes and 214 property crimes.

University of California’s Los Angeles and Berkeley campuses ranked Nos. 1 and 2, respectively.

Because some colleges on the list complained that some of the data includes neighboring noncampus areas, Business Insider produced a second list that contains only on-campus crimes 2007-09. While many of the schools from the original list remained in the new rankings, neither Indiana school was among them.
