Northeast Fort Wayne liquor store robbed at gunpoint

Thursday, December 13, 2012 - 2:53 pm

Employees of a northeast-side liquor store said two men robbed them at gunpoint Wednesday night, according to Fort Wayne Police reports.

Police responded at about 10:15 p.m. to an armed robbery at Belmont Beverage, 3309 N. Anthony Blvd., where two employees said a pair of men came into the store just before 10 p.m. armed with silver semiautomatic handguns, the reports said.

The employees said the two men ordered them behind the counter and demanded the cash from the register, according to the reports. After emptying the drawer, the robbers took the employees’ cell phones and wallets, which contained debit and gift cards, the reports said.

According to the reports, Belmont management did not tell police officers or detectives how much cash the men took.

Store employees described the robbers as wearing masks, hooded sweatshirts and either sweatpants or jeans.

Outside the store, a witness told police he had walked to the store at about 9:58 p.m. to see if he could buy a cigar before the store closed, but the doors were already locked, which he thought was strange. The witness looked in through a window but did not see anyone, the reports said.

The witness said he noticed a white car in poor condition parked by the front door with its rear facing the store. A man was sitting in the driver’s seat of the car with a hood pulled over his head. The witness left, returning only after he learned of the robbery, he told police.

The incident is the latest in a rash of robberies since November. Earlier Wednesday, a man robbed a PNC Bank in southwest Fort Wayne.
