A heavy fire Thursday morning caused extensive damage to a southeast Fort Wayne house.Firefighters arrived just before 6:30 a.m. at a home in the 2500 block of Marcy Lane, just southeast of Anthony Boulevard and McKinnie Avenue, where they found heavy flames coming from the rear of the one-story house, the Fort Wayne Fire Department said in a news release.

The blaze was so heavy, it forced fire crews to retreat from the house at one point, according to the news release. Flames also extended into the basement, attic and interior walls. Crews had the fire under control in 16 minutes, the release said.

The person who lived in the house was not at home when the fire started, and no injuries were reported. However, the blaze caused heavy fire, smoke and water damage to the house.Holiday Cab, the free service for local holiday revelers who need rides home after drinking, will return for its 25th consecutive year.

The program will start Dec. 20 and run 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. daily through January 1. First created in 1987, the service has provided an average of 250 to 300 cab rides each year to Fort Wayne residents who could have been at risk for drunken driving, Mayor Tom Henry's office said in a statement. Last year, the program provided rides to 400 people.

Holiday Cab offers free rides to anyone who lives within a 10-mile radius of downtown. Those who live farther away may still use the service but must pay the difference after 10 miles. The service will only take people home, not to another party, the statement said.

To get a ride from Holiday Cab, residents must call Deluxe Taxi at 426-1301.
