Briefs: Christmas Food Box distribution Saturday; Mass for Newtown victims Dec. 28

Wednesday, December 19, 2012 - 12:01 am

Christmas box distribution

The St. Mary's Soup Kitchen's annual Christmas Food Box distribution will take place 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the soup kitchen, 1101 Lafayette St.

Local students and volunteers have been working the past three months to collect food and other items for the food boxes, a news release said. Schools and organizations participating include South Side, North Side, Snider, Wayne-New Tech, Bishop Luers and Bishop Dwenger high schools, and local film production organization Windsong Pictures.

Organizers expect more than 1,100 families will receive a Christmas food box, the news release said.

Mass offered for Newtown victims

Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades of the Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend will offer a Mass at 12:05 p.m. Dec. 28 in memory of the children and adults killed Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn.

The Mass, which also will be for the victims' families, will take place at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 1122 S. Clinton St.

The worship service takes place on the Catholic Church's Feast of the Holy Innocents, which commemorates the children killed by order of King Herod shortly after Jesus Christ's birth in Bethlehem.
