Ice a factor in fatal U.S. 30 wreck

Thursday, December 27, 2012 - 9:32 am

A New Jersey man died Wednesday evening after his vehicle slid off an icy U.S. 30 in Whitley County, police said.

John Knaver, 50, of Wenonah, N.J., was going west on U.S. 30, just west of Columbia City, in a Dodge SUV and tried to pass another vehicle, according to the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department. As Knaver moved from the left travel lane to the right lane, he lost control due to the icy conditions, and the SUV rolled several times, police said.

Knaver died, and two passengers were hurt. Daniel Nevius, 26, of Gloucester, N.J., was taken to a hospital with pain in his leg. John Knaver Jr., 31, of Deptford, N.J., was taken to the hospital with a shoulder injury, according to police.
