INDIANAPOLIS — A North Carolina sculptor has won a commission to create bronze busts of late U.S. Rep. Julia Carson and another black Indiana lawmaker for a permanent collection.

Jon Hair of Cornelius, N.C., will create busts of Carson and James Sidney Hinton, who became the first black elected to the Indiana General Assembly when he won a term in the House in 1880. Carson served in the state Senate before being elected to the U.S. House in 1996. She died in 2007.

The Indiana Arts Commission, Indiana Historical Bureau and Indiana Department of Administration announced Thursday the busts of Hinton and Carson will be displayed in niches on the second and third floors of the Statehouse in downtown Indianapolis. They'll be part of black history display authorized by the General Assembly.
