Girl Scouts add taste of the tropics with new Mango Creme cookie

It replaces the Shout Out

Wednesday, January 9, 2013 - 12:01 am

Girl Scout cookies go on sale beginning Friday, and the lineup will feature the new Mango Creme cookie.

Here are more details about the new cookie and the cookie sale:

New cookie

The Mango Creme cookie replaces the Shout Out, a crisp, Belgian-style, caramelized cookie introduced in 2011. The other cookies being offered this year include longtime favorites Thin Mints, Shortbread, Peanut Butter Patties, Peanut Butter Sandwiches, Caramel deLites, Thanks-A-Lot and Lemonades. The price for all cookies is $3.50 per box, the same as in recent years.

Mango Cremes are touted as a healthier cookie option on the website of ABC Bakers (www.abcsmartcookies.com), which bakes all of the cookies for the local Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michiana organization.

ABC Bakers describes the Mango Cremes as a sandwich cookie with a crunchy, vanilla-and-coconut top and bottom, with mango-flavored creme filling between them.

The cookies contain no trans fats, hydrogenated oils or preservatives, ABC Bakers says on its website. The treats contain “NutriFusion,” which ABC Bakers says gives the cookies “all the nutrient benefits of eating cranberries, pomegranates, oranges, grapes and strawberries!”

Health information says one serving (three cookies) includes 15 percent RDI (reference daily intake) of Vitamin B1 and 6 percent of vitamins A, C, D, E and B6.

The cookies contain 180 calories per serving, of which 70 calories are from fat, the website says. That translates into 8 grams of total fat (12 percent of daily value), and 4 grams of saturated fat (20 percent of daily value). They contain no cholesterol, 100 mg of sodium, 11 grams of sugar, 1 gram of protein and virtually no fiber, the website says.

Just for comparison, perennially popular Thin Mints contain 160 calories per serving (four cookies), of which 70 calories are from fat, the website says. That figures out to 7 grams of total fat (11 percent of daily value) and 5 grams of saturated fat (25 percent of daily value). Thin Mints also contain no cholesterol, 110 mg of sodium, 11 grams of sugar, 2 grams of protein and virtually no fiber or vitamins.

The cookie sale

The Girl Scout cookie sale will continue through March 12.

To find the location of Girl Scout cookie sale booths near you, go to the local organization's website, www.gsnim.org. You also can call 1-800-283-4812.

You also can go to the website to make a donation through the Cookie Share program, which sends Girl Scout cookies to U.S. military personnel, a Girl Scouts news release said.

Along with raising funds for the Girl Scout organization and girls' individual troop, the cookie sale helps girls develop life and leadership skills, the Girl Scouts' news release said.

As part of cookie sale activities, girls learn how to plan, work in teams, make decisions, solve problems and manage resources.

The Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michiana serves more than 11,000 girls ages 5-17, with help from more than 4,200 adult volunteers, the news release said.
