Officer suspended for leaving weapon in public restroom

Tuesday, January 15, 2013 - 5:14 am

Det. Dale A Wilson of the Fort Wayne Police Department was suspended for three days for leaving his weapon in a public restroom in December. Wilson's suspension was one of the items on the Board of Safety's Agenda Monday.

According to Police Chief Rusty York, Wilson remembered he had left it in a restaurant restroom, but when he went back to the bathroom, the weapon was missing. After reviewing video from the restaurant, it was apparent several other individuals had been in the restroom between the time Wilson left it and when he went back for it. Wilson, who has been on the Fort Wayne Police Department for the past 27 years, had to purchase another weapon to replace the one he had lost. York said they have the registration number of the missing weapon in their files and should it turn up they will know.

Patrolman Jeffery McCann, a patrolman for 23 years had been suspended for three days for alleged misconduct, where reportedly his supervisors noticed that he was not patrolling between calls, he would instead return to IPFW for long periods of time. McCann was told by his supervisor to stop doing it once, but when it happened again he was suspended. He in turn was considering litigation against the department for the suspension. According to York, the whole matter was tabled when McCann applied for full-time disability. York said McCann had suffered an injury while working for the police department and, should he receive disabled status, he will be retiring from the force.

In other business, the board approved the following business: Officer John M. Kreiger will be promoted to sergeant starting January 28. Sergeant Robert L. LaLone, 33 years, 6 months of service, is being recognized for his service to the force, he passed away in December while still on the force. Sergeant Steven M. Sorgen, 33 years, 5 months of service, retired Dec. 11 and Lt. Richard L. Stoner, 35 years, 2 months of service, retired January 2. Scott E. Alday, Fort Wayne Fire Department, has been appointed as a reserve officer.

Special Police Commission renewals were approved for Shawn L. Barkley of City Utilities, Kevin C. Bauer of City Utilities, John E. Caywood of Neighborhood Code and Robert C. Dinse of Neighborhood Code. One new taxi cab application was approved for Jamie Maxwell, and renewals were approved for Jeffery S. Atkinson, Kevin Wise, Michael J. Craddock, Tania E. Glass, Nigel C.
