Alison Mansfield, a senior at Homestead High School, has been named recipient of the 2012-2013 Good Citizen Scholarship Award presented by the local Mary Penrose Wayne Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution. The scholarship award was presented during a ceremony Friday at the downtown Allen County Public Library.

The DAR Good Citizen Award was created to encourage and reward good citizenship, a news release said. Nominees from 15 area high schools were honored at the ceremony.

Along with Mansfield, the nominees include Phillip Litchfield, Bishop Dwenger; Elizabeth Hess, Bishop Luers; Leigh Flegge, Blackhawk Christian; Katherine Schantz, Canterbury; Gabriel Gemperline, Carroll; Zach Heck, Concordia Lutheran; Kristien Alexander, Heritage; Talitha Fischer, Leo; Bryce Hieber, New Haven; Anthony Kiefer, Northrop; Alyssa Wyatt, North Side; Kenya Thomas, Snider; Brooklyne Beatty, South Side; and Carissa Eisenmann, Woodlan.

Heck and Eisenmann were named honorable mention finishers in the scholarship judging, the news release said.

The scholarship competition included two parts:

•Each nominated student had to describe how he or she exhibits the qualities of a good citizen. Each nominee also had to submit an official copy of his or her high school transcript and two letters of recommendation.

•Nominees had to complete, within a two-hour sitting and without reference materials, an essay on the topic, “How are our freedoms and responsibilities as good citizens changing?” The session had to be supervised by a school faculty member or a DAR member.

The first part of the application process represented 70 percent of the overall score, and the supervised essay counted for 30 percent, the news release said.

Nominees were evaluated by a panel of judges not affiliated with the DAR. This year's judges were James Westerfield, chief fiduciary officer, Lake City Bank-Wealth Advisory Group; Kathy Bruns, president, KB Search; and Linda Ruffolo, executive director of development at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne.

Mansfield will be one of 13 Indiana Good Citizen Scholarship winners honored during the Indiana DAR state convention in May in Indianapolis. She also will have the opportunity to compete for the national DAR Good Citizen Scholarship.

During the last several years, Mansfield has won numerous awards for founding and continuing the nonprofit Operation U.S. Troop Support, which sends cards and letters of support and socks, toiletries and other needed items to U.S. troops serving overseas.
