Energy efficiency assessments
Residential home energy assessments are available at no cost through the statewide energy efficiency initiative Energizing Indiana. During the assessment, an energy advisor assesses the home's energy use, recommending appropriate efficiency measures and installing a kit full of energy-saving items. The assessments are available locally to electric customers of Indiana Michigan Power, NIPSCO and Vectren. A school education program is available for fifth-graders, and the School Building Assessment program identifies areas of inefficiency in school buildings and recommends improvements. Businesses can get incentives for making energy-efficient upgrades through the Commercial and Industrial Prescriptive Rebates program. ACRES reaches milestone
ACRES Land Trust announced it reached a milestone Dec. 27 when it preserved its 5,000th acre of land with its acquisition of the 87-acre Blue Cast Springs property in northeast Allen County. ACRES has increased its holdings from 4,959 to 5,046 acres.
Blue Cast Springs contains deep ravines, more than 3,000 feet of frontage along the Maumee River, a heronry (large grouping of active blue heron nests), mature hardwood forests and diverse plant life. The property also contains several springs that have a blue cast. A luxurious health spa opened on the property in 1913 to capitalize on the water's popularity and the property's scenic beauty.
Blue Cast Springs will be opened to the public by this summer, and a special designation of the 5,000th acre will be erected on the property. ACRES is currently developing a site plan for the property that includes hiking trails and scenic overlooks.
