INDIANAPOLIS — Police in Indianapolis say they had to shoot a pit bull mix dog that attacked an elderly woman three times to subdue it.

Indianapolis police spokeswoman Michael Hewitt tells The Indianapolis Star the dog attacked the woman about 2:10 p.m. Sunday. Hewitt says when the police officer arrived, the dog was atop the woman, biting her. Police say the officer lured the dog away, sprayed it with pepper spray and shot it three times as it tried to attack the officer, killing the dog.

Hewitt says the woman was taken to Wishard Hospital in serious condition.

Police didn't release the woman's name or any information about the dog's owner.
