SOUTH BEND — The coldest temperatures to grip Indiana in two years have forced schools across the state to cancel classes or delay openings and sent high numbers of homeless residents in search of shelter.

The wind chill fell well below zero in many areas of the state Monday night and Tuesday. The National Weather Service reports the wind chill hit 17 degrees below zero in Osceola and 12 below in Indianapolis.

The Indianapolis Star reports about 330 homeless people sought shelter at the Wheeler Mission. Spokesman Steve Kerr says that's about 200 more than the shelter's capacity and the highest number at the shelter since the 1930s.

Temperatures are expected to rise into the 20s Wednesday, but accumulating snow is predicted in much of the state later this week.
