Bring old cell phones and handheld electronics to the zoo for recycling - you'll keep harmful substances out of our landfills and help raise money for conservation projects.
Recycling cell phones and other electronics can benefit endangered animals and keep harmful substances out of landfills. An ore called Coltan (columbite-tantalite) is a source of the element tantalum, which is an essential coating for components of cell phones.
This ore is mined in gorilla habitats in the Congo. In recent years, the eastern lowland gorilla population there has declined 90 percent, according to the United Nations. Reducing the demand for Coltan can help save these animals and their habitat.
Simply drop off the items listed below at the Guest Service Building at the zoo entrance any weekday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.:
Cell phones & cell phone accessories

Portable hard drives
Chargers for any of the above
Please do not bring desktop computers, monitors, DVD players, VCRs or TVs.

Thanks to the Little Turtle Chapter of the American Association of Zookeepers for coordinating the cell phone recycling project to benefit conservation efforts.New tax laws enacted in early 2013 have restored the ability for those age 70 1/2 and older to rollover donations from an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) directly to a charity.
For the 2012 tax year only, IRA owners can choose to report qualified charitable distributions made in January 2013 as if they occurred in 2012. You must act before Jan. 31 to apply the tax benefits to your 2012 tax return. Any IRA donations occurring any other time in 2013 will be applied to your 2013 tax return.
Please consider a gift to the Fort Wayne Zoological Society using this tax-free provision. If you have any questions, please contact your financial advisor or Kelly at the zoo at 427-6836 or email@example.com.
