Book briefs: 'Goodnight' event planned in Garrett

‘Goodnight Garrett’

Garrett Public Library celebrates family literacy with “Goodnight Garrett,” a program for families with children in preschool through Grade 4, 5-7 p.m. Feb. 2 at 107 W. Houston St., Garrett. Activities include magician Jim Barron, a celebrity storyteller, storybook characters roaming the library, therapy dogs, craft stations and free books. Children are welcome to come in pajamas and should be accompanied by an adult.

Writing contest

The Faculty Writer's Group at Ivy Tech Community College-Northeast is sponsoring a writing contest to benefit Three Rivers Institute of Afrikan Art & Culture (TRIAAC).

To help contestants the writer's group will hold writing workshops Feb. 16 at Faith United Methodist Church, 207 E. DeWald St. Cost is $25. Participation in workshops is not required for contest. Contest deadline is March 1. Contest entry fee is $10 for adults and $5 for children.

Book sale

The Friends of Peabody Public Library, 1160 E. Indiana 205, Columbia City, is holding its semi-annual book sale 6-8 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 2. Most books are $1 or less.

Adult book group

The adult book group meets at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Aboite branch library, 5630 Coventry Lane.

Girls read

Girls, ages 6-12, can discuss what they're reading at 4 p.m. Monday at Tecumseh branch library, 1411 E. State Blvd.

PAWS to read

Children can practice their reading skills by reading to friendly dogs that want to listen at these locations:

•6:30 p.m. Mondays at Aboite branch library, 5630 Coventry Lane.

•4 p.m. Mondays at Grabill branch library, 13521 State St., Grabill.

•6 p.m. Mondays at Little Turtle branch library, 2201 Sherman Blvd.

•5 p.m. Thursdays at Pontiac branch library, 2215 S. Hanna St.
