Man struck, critically injured while directing traffic at I-69 crash site

Monday, January 28, 2013 - 9:43 am

A man is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle on I-69 Sunday evening while directing traffic.

According to a release from the Fort Wayne Police Department, the incident took place around 7:48 p.m. A Nissan SUV with Michigan plates was northbound on I-69 when it reportedly went out of control and struck the cement median wall. The Nissan came to a stop, blocking two lanes of traffic.

A couple driving a Chevrolet Equinox was northbound on I-69 and stopped to assist the occupants of the Nissan, with a man exiting the Equinox to direct traffic.

According to the release, the man was then struck by a minivan. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

None of the occupants of the Nissan were injured.

At the time, the road was slick from sleet. Investigators determined that alcohol was not a factor.

The incident remains under investigation by members of the Fort Wayne Police Department’s FACT team.
