Fort Wayne driver cited in woman's death in Florida

Tuesday, January 29, 2013 - 4:03 pm

An Ohio woman has died after she and her husband were struck by an 80-year-old Fort Wayne driver while on a street in Fort Meyers Beach, Fla.

Ann Bandy, 76, of Mentor, Ohio, died Tuesday morning, according to a news release from the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

Bandy and her husband, Robert, 82, were walking across Estero Boulevard at around 6:30 p.m. Monday when they were struck by a northbound Dodge Grand Caravan. The driver told investigators he was traveling at about 25 miles per hour and saw the couple in the crosswalk but was unable to stop, according to the release. The News-Sentinel is not releasing his name because he is charged with a misdemeanor: violation of a traffic control device (failure to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk).

The victims were taken to a hospital, where Robert Bandy remains with serious injuries.
