Man accused of killing 3 goats now out on bond

Tuesday, January 29, 2013 - 5:42 am

Tanner A. Macy, 19, of Roanoke, has posted bond after being charged with three counts of torturing or mutilating a vertebrate animal, a class D felony, and one charge of obstructing justice, also a class D felony.

According to court documents, the charges stem from a call made Thursday by a neighbor who keeps goats. The neighbor discovered the three animals had multiple, deep stab wounds and lacerations. There were footprints in the pen that led officers to Macy's home.

He was taken into custody, but the interview was cut short when Macy's attorney called and said he couldn't be interviewed without first talking to his lawyer. The defendant was returned to his family members, who were waiting at another home in Roanoke, while officers secured his home prior to obtaining a search warrant.

According to the affidavit for probable cause, two witnesses told police they saw Macy around his taped-off house, and he was seen leaving the house with something tucked under his shirt. Macy was then picked up for obstruction of justice. He was released Saturday after $10,000 bond was posted. A court hearing is scheduled Wednesday.

According to court documents, a search of Macy's home turned up a pair of athletic shoes with tread matching the footprints in the goat pen and a pair of jeans with red stains. They also impounded a Cadillac Escalade that police believed he was driving when he returned to the taped-off house.
