Wartell a finalist for president at Iowa university

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 - 2:22 pm

Michael Wartell, the former chancellor at IPFW, is a finalist for the presidency of the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.

According to the university, Wartell will visit for further interviews and meetings Monday and Tuesday.

Wartell became chancellor at IPFW in July 1994 and remained in that post until last summer, when he was compelled to step down after Purdue University administrators refused to waive a mandatory retirement age of 65. He remains a professor of chemistry at IPFW.

In recent years, enrollment at the Iowa school has been about 11,000 undergraduate and about 2,000 graduate students. The population of Cedar Falls is about 40,000.

There are two other finalists for president at the university.
