“We are extremely pleased to be able to announce the hiring of Brian Hardin at Ball State,” Cardinal athletic director Bill Scholl said in a release. “He is a quality individual who I have worked very closely with in the past. Brian will bring a great amount of energy and knowledge to Ball State. We look forward to him joining the Ball State family.”
Hardin has spent the last seven years as the director of football media relations at Notre Dame. In that position, he has managed the public image of the nation's most renowned college football program.
He has served as the primary contact for the Notre Dame football team to local, regional and national media outlets since 2006 and was the primary spokesperson for the Notre Dame football program. He worked with the university to coordinate the school’s communication strategies, which has has promoted two Heisman Trophy finalists, 11 national award winners, 16 national award finalists, six first-team All-Americans, 12 student-athletes who earned All-America honors, nine Academic All-Americans and three national scholar-athlete award recipients.
“I am thrilled to have received this opportunity to join the athletics department at Ball State,” Hardin said. “I have known Bill Scholl for almost seven years and look forward to working with him again. During the interview process, I was very impressed with everyone I met at Ball State, starting with Dr. Gora."
In addition to his media relations duties at Notre Dame, Hardin served as the sport administrator for men’s tennis. He was responsible for budget oversight, performance reviews and interaction with student-athletes and parents from an administrative perspective.
Hardin was a member of Notre Dame athletics director Jack Swarbrick’s senior staff committee since 2010.
In his role at Ball State, Hardin will have oversight responsibility for most of the department’s externally focused functions, as well as, supervision of several sports programs. He will also play a key role as a member of the senior leadership team in shaping the department’s vision, goals and strategies.

Prior to his work at Notre Dame, Hardin spent two years as a media relations assistant for the Chicago Bears. He began his professional career as a sports information intern at Loyola-Chicago in 2002-03 and as a media relations intern for the Bears in 2003-04.
He is a 2002 graduate of Marquette with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and was a sprinter on the track team for the Golden Eagles all four years and served as a team captain in his senior season. He worked as a student worker in Marquette’s sports marketing department as a junior and sports information department as a senior.
Hardin graduated from the Sports Management Institute Executive Program in 2011. He and his wife, Cara, have one son, Noah.
